Natural History Series: Birds of the Western Front
Wednesday Oct 11th, 7 pm-9 pm at McConnell Library, 50 Falmouth St, Sydney
What was the impact of artillery barrages, poison gas, incessant machine gun fire and bombing raids on the bird life of Flanders and northern France in the years of the Great War, 1914-1918? Were there birders among the warriors at the Front? What importance did birds have for ordinary soldiers struggling to survive day-to-day in the trenches? One hundred years after the horrific Battle of Passchendaele, join Alan MacLeod, birder, historian and author of Remembered in Bronze and Stone: Canada’s Great War Memorial Statuary to contemplate answers to such questions.
Presented by the Cape Breton Regional Library in partnership with the Cape Breton Naturalists Society.
Everyone welcome!
