Atlantic Book Award Event:
“Viola Desmond’s Canada”
Wednesday, May 17, 6:30 p.m. Wilfred Oram Centennial Library, 309 Commercial Street, North Sydney
In 1946, Viola Desmond was wrongfully arrested for sitting in a whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. In 2010, the Nova Scotia Government recognized this gross miscarriage of justice and posthumously granted her a free pardon. Join Dr. Graham Reynolds and Wanda Robson as they share stories of Viola Desmond’s extraordinary life. Dr. Reynold’s book, Viola Desmond’s Canada: A History of Blacks and Racial Segregation in the Promised Land, is shortlisted for the 2017 Robbie Robertson Dartmouth Book Award (Non-Fiction). He holds the Viola Desmond Chair for Social Justice at Cape Breton University, and Wanda Robson is Viola Desmond’s youngest sister who works tirelessly to bring Viola’s story to Canadians.
Books will be available for sale and signing.
As a bonus, Wanda Robson will also read from “The ABC’s of Viola Desmond”, a project of the Grade 2-3 class from William King Elementary School in Halifax.
Everyone welcome.
