CBRM argument

Mayoralty candidate Rankin MacSween is taking aim at Mayor Cecil Clarke over the flooding.

MacSween points out a municipal planning strategy document from 2010 pointed out the Washbrook area had a significant flood risk.  Council adopted the report in 2012 which called for development of a storm water watershed management plan for the entire CBRM.  But he adds that little has been done, saying Clarke is more focused on port development and debt reduction than addressing infrastructure issues.

Clarke defended the infrastructure that’s in place and plans for improving it in the near future.  He pointed out some of the washout in the Whitney Avenue area was around new infrastructure that just couldn’t stand up to 225mm of rain.
