Cape Breton Star shutdown

The Halifax Herald has shut down The Cape Breton Star.  The weekly newspaper was launched in May of 2014.

Yesterday’s edition of the Star is the last one published, however the Chronicle Herald will continue to publish the Cape Breton issue of the main paper.  Staff of the Cape Breton Star were laid off yesterday with $500 severance.

The Herald says one of the reasons for the closure was a prevailing headwind of union sympathy in industrial Cape Breton, with newsroom staff at The Herald on strike for several months now.
