Did you know that trees sleep??

Trees ‘sleep’ at night. That’s the fascinating conclusion from a team of scientists from Austria, Finland and Hungary. Using laser scanners pointed at 2 birch trees, they recorded physical changes indicative of nighttime slumber, with the tips of the birch branches dropping by as much as 4 inches overnight. They believe the dropping effect is caused by a decrease in the tree’s internal water pressure or turgor pressure. With no photosynthesis at night to drive the conversion of sunlight into simple sugars, trees conserve energy by relaxing branches that would otherwise be angled toward the sun.

So remember this the next time you are out after dark in the woods. Don’t be too loud or you’ll wake the trees!
